Ayush’s Cliff

The rays of the rising sun slanted over the gray summit of Burkhan Buudai Mountain, tinging it gold. The sparrows awoke and began to twitter. After hovering in the air for a while, they gathered into a small flock and flew towards two gers in the Tashuu Ravine, when chirping loudly, they descended upon a toono1 covered over with a felt. Just then, out of the ger came a young woman in a light-blue satin coat belted with a silk sash. She pulled the felt cover off the toono and squinting in the bright sunlight, looked around. On spying its mistress, a big-humped camel stretched out its long neck and began pawing the ground, as if to express its desire to be off on the way. Otgon, as the woman was called, walked over to the smaller ger nearby. The sparrows, accustomed to getting their breakfast as soon as Otgon appeared, flitted back and forth over the woman's head.

Bunia, a parachutist

It was the 10* year of the Manchu Dynasty Khan Protected by Heaven. On a fine summer day during the tzam celebrations the Manchurian vicegerent in Uliastai came to see the monastery of Erdene Zuu which had been built by the well-intentioned Khan Abtai. From the neighboring banners Mongolian noblemen and herdsmen had come to the tzam and monastery was busy. Many colored ten stood here and there. Well-dressed and wide chested men with a sweating faces bronzed by the steppe sun and beautiful slender women were riding on the smartly saddled horses. They neatly cut the mane of the horses and galloped in the steppe. Seeing the freedom-loving people vicegerent turned over in his mind that the skilful horsemen the and strong Mongols, were richer in their cultural heritage than Manchurians and it seemed to him that it was difficult to rule them without any crafty manoeuvres. And with approval thinking about the policy of the great emperor, Protected by Heaven, of ruling the Mongols with the help of the Buddhist yellow sect, the vicegerent looked at the tzam and the beautiful decoration of the monastery with great interest and he admired the skilled craftsmen's works.

Arslantai Mergen Khan /legend of Mongolia/

A long time ago there was a khan, called Arslantai Mergen. This khan's kingdom believed that unless their horses were all herded together, and grouped on low ground, they were not properly herded. Among his horses there was a wild chestnut horse. One day, the khan's horses were not together in a herd on the low ground. «Why should this be?» wondered the khan. He guessed that three wolves must have eaten some of his horses. So he prepared to hunt to the death those three wolves, and rode out on his chestnut horse, which was born of a chestnut mare. At this one wolf said to the others: «Arslantai Mergen khan intends to kill us by chasing us on his chestnut horse, the foal of a chestnut mare. As it is also the foal of a young mare, we shall have to try to get away, first, up to the top of a mountain, and then turn quickly and run away down the mountain-side, so that he cannot catch up with us.» The other wolves agreed with him. Next day, Arslantai Mergen Khan chased after the three wolves. They ran away, first, up to the top of a mountain, and then they turned swiftly down the mountain side, and he could not catch up with them.

On leaving Bat said to his wife jessing her head, "It is difficult for us both to leave you behind. But I shall return after a few years after finishing my military service. What is two three years, anyway. You change the cover of the ger constantly, tend and multiply the cattle and take good care of yourself".
At this Soli could not restrain her tears.
